Make Your Skin Look Better
A chemical peel uses a chemical solution to smooth the texture of your skin by removing the damaged outer layers. How much skin your New York City chemical peel specialist removes and how deep they penetrate will depend on the type of peel used, its strength and how long it is left on.
There are three types of chemical peel: superficial, medium and deep. These have varying percentages of active ingredients and different PH levels. Although chemical peels are used mostly on the face, they can also be used to improve the skin on your neck and hands. A chemical peel is one of the least invasive ways to improve the appearance of your skin. Sun exposure, acne, or just getting older can leave your skin tone uneven, wrinkled, spotted or scarred. During your consultation for a chemical peel NYC aesthetic specialists at SoVous will help you decide which type is best for you.
A chemical peel can improve:
What a chemical peel won't do:
Superficial/Light Peels
Superficial or light peels are the gentlest type of peels available and one of the true ‘lunchtime’ aesthetic procedures. They only remove the top layer of the skin, known as the epidermis, and can give your skin and instantly brighter look as well as a smoother, more even texture. They can be used to minimize fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, mild acne scarring, age spots and dry or flaking skin.
Medium Depth Peels
Medium depth peels give more dramatic results than superficial peels. Usually derived from TCA (trichloroacetic acid), they penetrate deeper in to the skin and can be used to treat sun damage, pigmentation and wrinkles. The downside of medium peels is that you will have a longer recovery and more side effects. You may also feel more discomfort during the treatment than you would with a superficial peel including burning and stinging, which can last for 30 minutes to an hour after treatment.
Deep Peels
Deep peels are the strongest type of chemical peel available and can achieve amazing results for sun damage, scarring and deep lines and wrinkles but be prepared to look quite scary after your treatment. They usually use carbolic acid (Phenol peels) or high strength TCA to penetrate the deeper layers, or dermal layers, of the skin.
Azelaic Acid helps promote a clear complexion and even skin tone by reducing microorganisms, exfoliating and inhibiting melanin production.
Citric Acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) naturally found in citrus fruits. It works by increasing the hyaluronic acid content in the dermis and epidermis, helping the skin attract and hold moisture more effectively. It will also exfoliate the skin’s impacted surface cells and is a natural brightener and softener.
Glycoic Acid comes in different strengths (30% – 90%) and different pH levels (levels of acidity) which will determine how deep it penetrates and how much peeling you get. It can be used to treat fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, improvement of skin texture, skin brightening.
Kojic Acid helps promote an even skin tone by reducing bacterial growth and inhibiting melanin production.
Lactic Acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) naturally found in milk and sugars. It is part of the skin's natural moisturizing factor (NMF) and moisturizes the skin.
L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) is an antioxidant and MMPi that is the only bio-available form of vitamin C for the skin. It minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while promoting an even skin tone.
Malic Acid comes from apples and pears and is a weaker AHA than glycolic acid. It can be used to treat acne, photo damage, rosacea, superficial pigmentation, eczema. Citric acid comes from lemons and oranges and works in the same way as tartaric and malic acids. It can be used to treat acne, photo damage, rosacea, superficial pigmentation, eczema.
Mandelic Acid derived from bitter almonds, this alpha-hydroxy acid works agains inflammation and pigment formation to even out complexion.
Resorcinol is a flaking agent.
Retinoids (Vitamin A) are converted to retinoic acid in the skin, Vitamin A helps to promote a clear complexion and an even skin tone.
Salicylic Acid is a calming lipophilic beta hydroxy acid that helps promote a clear complexion by reducing microorganisms and inflammation.
Tartaric Acid comes from grapes and is a less irritating alternative to glycolic acid for a milder exfoliation of the skin. It can also help increase hydration. It can be used to treat acne, photo damage, rosacea, superficial pigmentation, eczema.
